How often should interior walls be repainted?

Most interior walls should be repainted every 5 to 7 years, but the right schedule depends on the room, traffic level, moisture, sunlight exposure, paint quality, and how the space is used.
High-traffic areas usually need repainting sooner. Hallways, stairways, entryways, family rooms, mudrooms, and children’s rooms often collect fingerprints, scuffs, dents, and everyday marks. These areas may need fresh interior paint every 3 to 5 years to keep the home looking clean and well maintained.
Lower-traffic rooms usually last longer. Adult bedrooms, formal dining rooms, guest rooms, and lightly used spaces may go 7 years or more before needing repainting, especially when quality paint was used and the walls are cleaned carefully.
Kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms may need repainting more often because moisture, steam, cooking residue, handprints, and frequent cleaning can wear down the paint finish. Choosing the right interior paint finish also helps walls stay cleaner and easier to maintain.
If your walls look faded, stained, scuffed, difficult to clean, or outdated, it may be time to repaint. A fresh interior paint job can make your home feel brighter, cleaner, more comfortable, and better cared for.
